One orbit, several companies

Elon Musk is behind a linked set of AI, rockets, cars, implants, and tunnels. Here is what each of them does now.

xAI trains machines to question the universe

Founded in March 2023. Its public aim is to understand the true nature of the universe. The main product is the Grok model family.

Colossus was built in a former Electrolux factory in Memphis. The first cluster came online in 122 days. Then it doubled to 200,000 GPUs in 92 days. xAI lists 194 PB/s of aggregate memory bandwidth, 3.6 Tb/s per server, and more than 1 EB of storage. The roadmap is one million GPUs.

SpaceX made launch a commodity

Founded in 2002. Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and the Dragon spacecraft turned private spaceflight from a craft into a schedule. The company's goal is to make life multiplanetary.

Starship is meant to carry cargo and people to Mars and to replace Falcon once it flies several times a week. On 25 August 2026 the last Falcon 9 Starlink mission left Cape Canaveral. Florida Starlink batches are planned to fly on Starship from here.

Fleet in orbit and on the pad

Three machines that hold the tempo: a reusable booster, a Mars ship, and an internet constellation.

Falcon 9

The workhorse. By late August 2026 the fleet had already passed its hundredth flight of the year. Booster B1067 had flown 37 times.

A fully reusable system. Florida Starlink will launch on it. The long goal is regular runs to Mars.

The largest constellation ever flown. 12,881 launched since 2019, 11,087 working. Counts as of 27 August 2026.

On the ground: cars, nerves, tunnels

Not everything in this group flies. Tesla, Neuralink, and The Boring Company cover energy, the body, and the city.

Tesla

Founded in 2003. Musk joined as an investor in 2004 and later became CEO. Electric cars, energy storage, solar roofs, Autopilot, and the Optimus robot. A public company.

Neuralink

Founded in 2016. The N1 implant reads cortical signals and lets people with paralysis control a computer. The first human received a device in 2024.

The Boring Company

Founded in 2017. It digs cheaper urban tunnels. The most visible project is the Vegas Loop around the Las Vegas Convention Center, opened in 2021.

A short chronicle

Not a full biography. Only the nodes the map cannot lose.

  1. SpaceX

    The company starts. Twenty years later Falcon 9 is the most-flown orbital rocket.

  2. Tesla

    Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded the company. Musk came in as a major investor in 2004.

  3. Neuralink and Boring

    A brain-computer interface and city tunnels appear almost back to back.

  4. Twitter acquisition

    A $44 billion deal. The platform was later renamed X.

  5. xAI

    A new AI lab. Public mission: understand the universe. Grok arrives.

  6. Colossus and N1

    The Memphis supercomputer comes online. Neuralink places the first human implant.

  7. Starlink moves to Starship

    The last Falcon 9 Starlink from Florida. The constellation passed 11,000 working satellites.
